March 5, 2026 What's New CDC: Common Cancers in Metropolitan and Non-metropolitan Counties. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a new United States Cancer Statistics report examining cancer incidence and death rates in the U.S. from 2018–2022. Deaths for each of the common cancer types were higher in non-metropolitan (rural) counties than in metropolitan counties. The report includes a data visualization tool that allows you to filter the data by age and sex as well as rurality. HRSA Seeking Nursing Survey Responses. Since 1977, HRSA has conducted the National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses (NSSRN), the longest-running and primary source of data on the U.S. nursing workforce. In mid-March 2026, selected nurses will receive a notice from our colleagues at the U.S. Census Bureau inviting them to take the survey, and HRSA's Bureau of Health Workforce needs your help: - If you receive a notice from the U.S. Census Bureau, follow the instructions to complete the survey.

Among the key findings in this policy brief examining regional differences: - Rates of lifetime use were significantly higher in rural counties compared to urban counties.
- Lifetime methamphetamine use was notably high in the rural west and was highest in rural counties in the Pacific Census Division.
- There is evidence to suggest that people in rural areas partake in riskier use behaviors, such as injecting methamphetamine with a needle and co-using with alcohol.
