What's New

CDC: Common Cancers in Metropolitan and Non-metropolitan CountiesThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a new United States Cancer Statistics report examining cancer incidence and death rates in the U.S. from 2018–2022.  Deaths for each of the common cancer types were higher in non-metropolitan (rural) counties than in metropolitan counties.  The report includes a data visualization tool that allows you to filter the data by age and sex as well as rurality.

HRSA Seeking Nursing Survey Responses.  Since 1977, HRSA has conducted the National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses (NSSRN), the longest-running and primary source of data on the U.S. nursing workforce.

In mid-March 2026, selected nurses will receive a notice from our colleagues at the U.S. Census Bureau inviting them to take the survey, and HRSA's Bureau of Health Workforce needs your help:

  • If you receive a notice from the U.S. Census Bureau, follow the instructions to complete the survey.
  • If you work with nurses who receive the survey, please encourage them to complete it.

Learn more from the Census Bureau's Frequently Asked Questions about the NSSRN.

Funding and Opportunities

NIH Native Collective Research Effort to Enhance Wellness (N CREW) Phase II – July 31.  N CREW was established by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to address opioid use and pain in Native communities as part of The Helping to End Addiction Long-term® Initiative.  Two Research Opportunity Announcements invite applications from Tribes and Native Serving Organizations (T/NSOs) – including those without prior NIH funding:  1) Advancing Native Research Projects seeks projects lasting up to five years to plan and conduct research projects; 2) Native Research Resource Partners seeks T/NSOs and Ally Organizations to serve as Native Research Resource Partner sites that provide support to the N CREW Program.

AHRQ Small Health Services Research Grant Program – ongoing until July 2029.  The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) supports different types of health services research projects that advance health services quality in several AHRQ priority areas for research.

Methamphetamine Use, Mental Health Comorbidities, and Treatment in Rural and Urban Areas.  Among the key findings in this policy brief examining regional differences:

  • Rates of lifetime use were significantly higher in rural counties compared to urban counties.
  • Lifetime methamphetamine use was notably high in the rural west and was highest in rural counties in the Pacific Census Division.
  • There is evidence to suggest that people in rural areas partake in riskier use behaviors, such as injecting methamphetamine with a needle and co-using with alcohol.
