Honor the Women in Your Life

More than half of the American population has diabetes or prediabetes, making it likely that a woman in your life is already struggling with the disease. And the scary truth is—diabetes carries serious health risks for women:

• Women with diabetes are more likely to have a heart attack, and at a younger age, than women without diabetes.

• The risk of depression, blindness, and kidney disease increases in women with diabetes.

• Some women with diabetes have less interest in sex because of depression or changes in blood glucose (blood sugar) levels that can leave them feeling tired or irritable.

This is why the American Diabetes Association^® is fighting to do the groundbreaking research vital to improving treatments and finally finding a cure for diabetes. But we urgently need your help to keep these research programs going.

As Women's History Month comes to a close, please consider remembering the most important woman in your life and giving a gift in her honor or memory—or simply stand with us and ALL women who deserve to live a life free of diabetes and its burdens.

This National Minority Health Month, Give Your Community a Boost!

April is National Minority Health Month (NMHM)! This year the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) and its partners are highlighting the important role individuals and organizations can play in helping to reduce health disparities and improve the health of racial and ethnic minority and American Indian and Alaska Native communities.

This year's NMHM theme is Give Your Community a Boost! This theme focuses on the continued importance of COVID-19 vaccination, including boosters, as one of the strongest tools we can use to end the COVID-19 pandemic. The theme also supports the many other efforts happening in communities throughout the country to advance health equity.

New 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline Will Strengthen Mental Health Services for All

988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. While some areas may be currently able to connect to the Lifeline by dialing 988, this dialing code will be available to everyone across the United States starting on July 16, 2022.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255) is a network of over 200 locally operated and funded crisis centers. 988 is more than just an easy-to-remember number—it's a direct connection to compassionate, accessible care and support for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress.

Community-Based Mental Health Intervention to Address Structural Inequities and Adverse Disparate Consequences of COVID-19 Pandemic on Latino Immigrant and African Refugees

This study, sponsored by the University of New Mexico (UNM) and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), seeks Latino immigrants and African refugees age 18 years or older. This study will test a community-based peer advocacy and social support intervention to reduce the negative consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study will be carried out at UNM in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

This phase III clinical trial, sponsored by Emory University and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), seeks adults age 50 years or older with a positive test confirming the diagnosis of COVID-19.
