Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is observed each year from September 15 to October 15. During the month, the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) celebrates the culture, achievements and contributions of Hispanics and Latinos in the United States. Visit the OMH Blog for Health Equity to learn how OMH is supporting Hispanic communities to stay healthy during COVID-19. The HHS Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have released guidance on Pregnancy, Breastfeeding and Caring for Newborns during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 Prevention Network series, COVID in Black, is now available on their Facebook page. Episodes address the importance of increasing awareness and knowledge about COVID-19 clinical trials and the impact of COVID-19 on the Black community.

The Addiction Technology Transfer Center (ATTC) Network and the Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC) Network have compiled ATTC Network COVID-19 Response Resources and Pandemic Response Resources that address the intersection of COVID-19 and substance abuse. The PTTC has also made available a recorded version of their An Ecological Snapshot of Racial Inequity webinar.

October 15: National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day

October 15 is National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day, a day to help stop HIV stigma and promote strategies and tools to address the disproportionate impact of HIV on Hispanic/Latino communities. Find the facts and let's #StopHIVTogether

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Find information on breast cancer at the HHS Office on Women's Health (OWH) website, learn about the CDC's The Right to Know breast cancer screening campaign and find statistics on breast cancer and other cancers by race and ethnicity via the American Cancer Society, CDC, National Cancer Institute and North American Association of Central Cancer Registries Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer.   

October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The OWH provides information on Relationships and SafetyW.O.M.A.N. runs a 24-Hour Support Line, including in-depth case management to Spanish-speaking survivors of domestic violence, and the Asian Pacific Institute on Gender-Based Violence and the Asian/Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project address domestic violence among Asian American, Pacific Islander and Native Hawaiian communities.

Clinical Trials

The PROSPECT Study: Psychosocial, Environmental and Chronic Disease Trends in Puerto Rico

This longitudinal study, sponsored by the Harvard School of Public Health, the NIH National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), and the University of Puerto Rico, seeks Puerto Rican adults age 30-75 years old in order to collect data on psychosocial, dietary and cardiovascular health by urban/rural area and by timing before/after Hurricane Maria. Study is to be conducted at FDI Clinical Research in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The LATITUDE Study: Long-Acting Therapy to Improve Treatment SUccess in Daily LifE

This phase 3 clinical trial, sponsored by the NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and ViiV, seeks volunteers age 18 years or older with an HIV-1 infection who are non-adherent to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Study is to be conducted at 35 locations throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

Training: Sexual Violence Training for Community Health Workers/Promotoras

This online course, offered by the Arizona Rural Women's Health Network and the Western Region Public Health Training Center, provides an introduction to some basic knowledge and skills useful in assisting and responding to victims of sexual violence. This course offers a certificate of completion and continuing education contact hours (CECH) for Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES).

Training: Health Literacy for Public Health Professionals

This online, CDC TRAIN course educates health professionals about public health literacy and their role in providing health information and services and promoting health literacy. The course uses a 508-compliant template, knowledge checks, scenario-based interactions, video clips and a post-test to engage learners. This course offers continuing education (CE) credits.
