Ayurveda, also called Ayurvedic medicine, is an ancient medical system from India based on writings that rely on a "natural" and holistic approach to physical and mental health.

 

Ayurvedic medicine is one of the world's oldest medical systems. Treatment approaches include products from plants and other sources, diet, exercise, and lifestyle.

 

Is Ayurveda effective? Only a small number of rigorous scientific studies have evaluated Ayurvedic treatments. A few studies suggest that Ayurvedic preparations may be helpful for osteoarthritis pain and type 2 diabetes symptoms. There's little evidence on the value of Ayurveda for other health problems.

 

Is Ayurveda safe? Some Ayurvedic preparations may not be safe. They may contain lead, mercury, or arsenic in amounts that can be toxic.
