Advancing AANHOPI Health Equity Practices

omh blog

As we wrap up Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month this May, it's important that we examine the past in order to inform the future decisions regarding the health of Asian American and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander (AANHOPI) ethnicities.

"Asians and NHOPI are distinct ethnic groups with varying cultures, lived experiences, and unique challenges that deserve their own attention", said LCDR Lusi Martin-Braswell, a public health analyst at the HHS Office of Minority Health.

The blog discusses the importance of maintaining the separation of the Asian and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander (NHOPI) ethnicities in distinct categories. Lusi highlights President Biden's Proclamation on Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month, 2021 and provides considerations for those that are working to improve health in AAHOPI communities.
