The Potential and Challenges of Mucosal COVID-19 Vaccines

Although currently vaccines for COVID-19 are usually effective, researchers are still investigating how future vaccines could be improved. A mucosal vaccine, which could improve the immune response in recipients' respiratory tracts, could someday serve as a booster to help prevent infection and transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. In a virtual workshop in 2022, supported in part by NIAID, participants discussed the potential of mucosal vaccines currently in development, and some of the challenges which researchers have faced.
