Traveling for the holidays this year? If so, there are certain health issues that can pop up during travel. Perhaps you've wondered whether complementary health approaches could help you avoid or cope with health problems that might occur during your trip. For one common problem—jet lag—the answer may be yes. Taking the dietary supplement melatonin before air travel across time zones may reduce jet lag symptoms. But be sure not to take melatonin early in the day when it may make you sleepy and delay your adjustment to the local time. There's less evidence supporting complementary health approaches for other travel-related health problems. Studies on acupressure for motion sickness have had mixed results. Probiotics haven't clearly been shown to be helpful for travelers' diarrhea. And there's little evidence that any dietary supplement can help with altitude illness. |
