National Preparedness Month is recognized each September to raise awareness about steps we can take to prepare for unexpected disasters and emergencies.

National Preparedness Month is recognized each September to raise awareness about steps we can take to prepare for unexpected disasters and emergencies. Planning for emergencies is especially important for individuals with Autism and their families who have unique safety considerations.

Did you know that approximately 49% of individuals with Autism have been known to wander, along with 50% of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities and up to 60% of people with Alzheimer's and related dementia? This contributes to increased risk of injury or death due to drowning, a leading cause of death for individuals with Autism. The Autism Society is leading a national effort to prevent water and wandering tragedies through the Kevin & Avonte program.

Help us spread awareness and emergency preparedness by sharing our new safety resources like our Wandering Emergency Plan and other tools in our Safety on the Spectrum™ Wandering Resource Guide.

Together, we can create a safer world where everyone in the Autism community is connected to the support they need, when they need it.
