Science-Based Research is Needed, Misinformation is Dangerous

Please keep an eye out for your Summer 2024 Newsletter mailing

Dear Hcis,

This week, the Administration made deeply misleading and harmful claims about the cause of Autism — reviving long-debunked theories and suggesting the so-called “Autism epidemic” can be "eliminated" in just five months of research. Global disability groups, the scientific community, and medical experts agree — more science-based research is needed to better understand Autism to provide urgent, essential supports, and protect the civil rights of our community.

The Administration's statements aren’t just false, they’re dangerous. They promote stigma, ignore decades of rigorous scientific research, and reduce Autistic people to a problem to be solved, rather than individuals to be respected and supported.

The Autism Society of America continues to fight back. Autism is not a disease nor a contagion. It is a complex developmental disability shaped by genetic, biological, and environmental factors, and — as we are highlighting during Autism Acceptance Month — everyone’s experience is unique. Any inquiry demands thoughtful, evidence-based research — not fear, misinformation, or political theater.

The Autism Society remains committed to its role as a non-partisan organization, tasked to protect civil rights and speak out against injustices towards the Autism community.

We’re speaking out — and we need your help.

Your support ensures the Autism Society’s advocacy remains rooted in science, respect, and lived experience. Together, we can speak out against misinformation, demand transparency in federal policy, and ensure research about Autism is led by credentialed experts and includes the voices of Autistic individuals, caregivers, professionals, and advocacy organizations.

Now more than ever, your support makes a difference.

Autism, science, and public health, affect everyone, and should not be politicized. When you give to the Autism Society, you help us protect the rights, dignity, and health of our community.
