Credit: Adobe Stock To combat deadly meningitis outbreaks, Nigeria launched an effort to vaccinate one million people with a vaccine called Men5CV, which protects against five groups of the meningitis pathogen Neisseria meningitidis. The WHO recommended the vaccine for campaigns in the country, a part of "Africa's meningitis belt," based partly on positive interim results from a trial run by the NIAID-supported Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Consortium (IDCRC).
